Description

Relates the misadventures of a middleclass man who succumbs to temptation and spends all the coal money on alcohol.

Sketch for cartoon sequence to be published as full-page illustration in the Christmas number of the Spectator - 31 December 1909.

Inscriptions: Recto - bottom centre - DAVID LOW; Captions for each of the 9 sketches: 1. "Don't forget to order a ton of coal, dear. Here are two pound notes to pay for it. We are right out. 2. "Dear" goes in to "change" the notes and comes out about five bob short. 3. "Dear" meets a friend and another five bob breaks loose. 4. "Lemme (hjic) shee now. Half a (hic) ton'll do. 5. Another friend. 6. "Dear": S'all ri'. Quarrer ton'sh plenty. Comean aveanother!" 7. The balance rapidly shrinks to eighteen-pence 8. But "Dear" is equal to the occasion. 9. He brings home a bushell and fondly murmers[sic] : "Here y'are m'dear - brought t'ome m'shelf - save expensh"
