- Description
72 soldiers, posing around a statue of Queen Victoria, with flags to both sides of the statue. The soldiers and officers are dressed in about 60 different regimental uniforms of the British Empire. The event appears to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in London in 1897.
The group includes Captain Robin, Colonel Pitt and Captain Brown, all of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles. The front standing figures are, from left, Field Marshall Lord Wolseley, Field Marshall the Duke of Connaught, Major-General Lord Kitchener, and Field Marshall Lord Roberts
The Library holds a copy of a key to this work, numbering and identifying, all 72 soldiers. Regiments (both military and police) from Cyprus, British Guiana, North Borneo, New South Wales, Trinidad, Natal, Ceylon, Malay, Grenadier Guards, Canada, Malta, Rhodesia, Western Australia, West India, South Australia, Queensland, Victoria, Mauritius, Lagos, Straits Settlement, Ceylon, Niger, Gold Coast, Sierra Leone, Hong Kong and 17th Lancers are included
The strong likenesses depicted suggest that the print is based on a photograph, probably taken in London. An Irish flag is prominent at the right alongside the statue of Queen Victoria
