Description: A defensive fort with a surrounding fence, a house to the left, looking south along the foreshore past a wharf at Akaroa. Located at the southern end of Akaroa township in 'English Town'. One of three blockhouses built by the French Navy after the Wairau Affray and hostilities between Maori and Pakeha in Northland and Wellington. The Akaroa blockhouses were never used. From the sketchbook kept by Mantell during his journey down the South Island as Commissioner for the Extinguishment of Native Titles.
