Description

Olaf Frederick Nelson, Samoan nationalist and Mau leader, photographed with his daughters in front of the Parliament building (Fale Fono), on their return to Samoa for the second time. Accompanying them are Europeans and Samoans. Photographed by Alfred James Tattersall in 1936.

Olaf Frederick Nelson was the son of a Swedish sailor and a Samoan mother. By the 1920s he was a wealthy merchant trader living in Apia. As a result of Samoan dissatisfaction with the New Zealand administration of their country, Nelson emerged as a Samoan nationalist leader, especially associated with the Mau movement. This resulted in him being exiled from Samoa to New Zealand from 1928 to 1933, and again from 1933 to 1936.
