Carte de visite copy of an original drawing by Gustavus Ferdinand von Tempsky showing the scene of the conflict at Hairini on 22 February1864. Copy made by an unknown photographer.
The photograph has written at the bottom 'Rangiowhia : scene of conflict with the rebel Maories on the 22nd Feb 1864'. Rangiowhia [Rangiaowhia] has been crossed out and Hairini written alongside by an unknown person.
A similar drawing by von Tempsky is held in the Drawings & Prints Section at A198/2.
The location of Hairini has been confirmed by a researcher. Armstrong 6 pounder canons were brought to the area for the Hairini conlict and never used at Rangiaowhia.
