Description

Shows the ship 'Hindostan' at Port Chalmers. Photograph taken by David Alexander De Maus. Dated from the Comber Index which indicates that the 'Hindostan' made only one voyage to Port Chalmers, leaving london on 26 March 1874, and arriving 12 July 1874. See Comber Index (p 226).

Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - bottom right - "Hindostan."

The 'Hindostan' was a full-rigged ship of 1262 tons, built at Jarrow in 1863. She was chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company for the voyage in 1874. Not to be confused with two other ships of the same name: One of 833 tons, which arrived in Auckland in 1873, and was renamed Waitara (Comber p 215); and another of 1547 tons, built in New Brunswick and launched in 1874, which arrived in Wellington in May 1875 (Comber p 244)
