The radio commentator at the Melbourne Olympic stadium announces the emergence of the New Zealand "team" of four selectors being chased around the track by a furious New Zealand public. The selection panel picked a team of 56 but rejected 39 other nominees put forward by the national sporting organisations on the basis that they did not have "a reasonable chance of reaching the finals or, in any sport where there are no finals or standards for comparison, a reasonable chance of representing New Zealand with credit". Among the rejections were the entire rowing eight, the decathlete Roy Williams (brother of Yvette), who later became a Commonwealth champion, the whole water polo team and all the road cyclists.
