Description

The collection consists of a copy of a letter written by Fama on the 1st October 1916 from France giving a `stretcher bearer's point of view of the Battle of Somme' and of a number of newspaper clippings. These clippings include several which cover his career in the theatre and in World War One concert parties and a copy of a letter Fama wrote to the Sept 10th, 1918 issue of `The Triad'.

Gaetano J Fama (Tano) was involved in theatrical events in Wanganui and Patea before leaving for Egypt with the 5th Reinforcements. He served with the Medical Corps as a stretcher bearer in Egypt and France, being wounded during the Battle of the Somme. During the war he was part of the Divisional Concert Party or Digger troups that provided entertainment for the troops. After the war he was one of the principals in the `Famous Diggers' and was also involved in the motion-picture industry and in theatre management. He died in 1940.
