Description

Cover shows an electric unit on a railway line, with the crest of the New Zealand Railways at the top. The title on the inside front page is: "Official change-over from steam to electric traction and introduction of multiple unit passenger trains. Inaugural ceremony at Wellington Station, 2.30 pm, Saturday, 2nd July 1938.

Inside pages show photographs of the exterior and interior of the units, the auxiliary control compartment in the motor coach, the interior of the 1500-volt rectifier cubicle, telescopic handrails and flexible jumpers between carriages, the inerior of a carriage, a timetable of bus and rail services. There is also a history of the old Manawatu Line, a photograph of the new electric locomotive, nine of which were being built at the Hutt Valley Railway Workshops, photographs of the "Maahunui" and "Aotea" railcars, and a "K" class locomotive, and the 31-seater diesel bus that operated between Wellington and Johnsonville.
