- Description
Maori bird snaring perch (pae). Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber circa 1920.
Inscriptions: Verso - The Maori "pae" or bird snaring perch. The loose cords shewn, when pulled taut, would imprison the bird's legs. These Pae" were fastened to [the] end of a long pole, & then pushed up among the branches of a tree wheron birds were known to alight. When a bird was caught, the "Pae" was lowered, the bird put in the hunter's bag & the snare reset. The name "Pae-kakariki" is derived from "Pae" - a snare , & kakariki - the green parrakeet, a place where was a snare for parakeets. A P Godber
