Description

A view from the sea, showing a three-masted barque, possibly intended to represent the Tory, in the left foreground. The Sugar Loaf Islands and volcanic peak Paritutu in right foreground. Mount Egmont and foothills in the background.

Mount Egmont or Taranaki is represented rather more accurately in this view, than in Heaphy's Mount Egmont from the Southward, where its cone is depicted with too great a perfection.

Possibly an imaginative reconstruction by the artist of his voyage aboard the Tory past Mt Taranaki in 1839 or 1840.
