M class steam locomotive, 'M' 4, was originally built by Hunslet Engineering Co., Leeds, as 0-6-0T type, and went into service in July 1876. There were 4 "M" class locomotives of this type, which were simple, reliable and efficient. Between 1888 and 1890 they were all converted, at the Addington Workshops, to 2-4-4T type wheel arrangements to enable them to run on lighter lines. The conversion was unsuccessful. 'M' 4 was written off in 1924. See "Cavalcade of New Zealand locomotives" by A N Palmer & W W Stewart, and "Register of New Zealand Railways steam locomotives, 1863-1971" by W G Lloyd.
