View looking north along the beachline, with two food storage platforms and a low building to the right, a food bundle on a stick supported by a pyramid of logs, tents or raupo whare to the left and a European man standing, holding a flag, while a Maori woman crouches behind him, attending to cooking or holding a kete. The word Tipare is inscribed lower left. Mantell's party was close to Hakatere, at the mouth of the Ashburton River, or a little further south, on 7 October.
