Synopsis of "La Perouse" is given thus: "The piece opens with a tremendous storm. Perouse seen swimming from the wreck and reaches the Island - is alarmed at the appearance of a great bear and champanzee [chimpanzee] - interior view of a grotto - a calm sea - the interior of the island - icebergs and frozen lake - exterior of Perouse's hut. Natives at a repast - they observe Perouse, he enters; the natives rush out and prepare to destroy him; Umba prevents them and becomes enamoured of Perouse; Kanko is jealous; Perouse is wounded by a poisoned arrow from Kanko; Ch[i]mpanzee sucks the wound and he recovers. Sea scene - ship L'Esperance arrives. Madame Perouse and her son from France in search of her husband; she discovers an inscription, which informs her of his fate".
