Groups of people sitting and standing on an area of lawn close to the water's edge. One woman has a Union Steam Ship Company towel over her shoulders. Some people are wearing bathing costumes. The photograph was probably taken at a Union Steam Ship Company picnic in Queen Charlotte Sound by Wellington photographer, W H Raine, in 1930s.
