Transcription by Colin Bassett of diary kept by Gunner James Stubbs in World War Two beginning with an account of his military service from 1940 to 1943 when the diary begins (21 Nov 1943) and finishing 1 Jun 1944, shortly before his death in Wellington 10 Jun 1944
Stubbs describes his enlistment and training from 1940 to 1943 when he left New Zealand on the `Nieuw Amsterdam', arriving in Egypt in Aug 1943; he describes the voyage, places visited, and Cairo, then sailing to Italy and serving there including Cassino. He returned to New Zealand on the `Wanganella' but became ill on board and died on his arrival in Wellington
