Comprises original of `Red beech writing' with cover, layout and illustrations, two letters from Ross to the Turnbull Library describing these papers, two draft letters from Ross (not sent), to Keri Hulme and Chris Hooker, loose illustrations including maps of the Lewis and Arthur's Pass areas, and a play, `How the ecosystem works' (1996)

In `Red beech writing' Ross describes his experiences as a hunter, tramper and mountaineer in the NZ back country with particular emphasis on the people he tramped with, the huts they stayed in and flora and fauna. Among the areas he writes about are Kapiti Island, the Paparoas, the West Coast, Fiordland, the Rakaia and Stewart Island.
