Wellington playcentres wanted Education Minister Lockwood Smith to acknowledge their expertise as early childhood educators in his Parents as First Educators scheme. The 25 member groups of the Wellington playcentre Association signed a statement for presentation to Dr Smith. Parents and children came by train from as far as Otaki to be in Parliament grounds for the occasion.
