Shows a single storeyed home surrounded by a neatly kept garden, set out in squares and rows, with a fence around it. At the right, in another fenced property, a group of three Maori sit around a camp fire. In the left distance can be seen a flagpole and three other houses. The bush remains uncleared in the right background.
Major Richard Baker's cottage was above the Northern end of Thorndon Quay, near Kaiwharawhara.
Baker won prizes for "Bouquet flowers" and turnips, in the Wellington Horticultural Show, 22 January 1842. (See Winsome Shepherd "Wellington's heritage, plants, gardens and landscapes", Wellington 2000, pages 151-153)
