Shows the Grey Institute mission school in rolling hilly country with cattle grazing on the hills in the right foreground, and a road being cut and constructed in the centre foreground, with men pushing wheelbarrows. At the crest of a hill in the right background is the older part of the Grey Institute, the original building.
Artist, title and date provided by the auction catalogue. The work appears to be by the same hand as the watercolour of Omata Stockade, A-113-007, and has therefore been tentatively attributed to Francis Hamar Arden, rather than Hamar Humphrey Arden. It could also be Hamar Humphrey Arden, as attributions to these two artists may be mixed.
Appears to be the original for an illustration in William Morely's History of Methodism (Wellington, 1900), p. 114, titled Mission house at Ngamotu and Grey Institute, 1864 from a watercolour by Mr Harden [sic] New Plymouth
