- Description
Shows a narrow curved beach below a steep hilside sloping down from the right. Two prospectors, one with a pick, and one with a backpack, walk away along the sand beside the water. There is a rocky outcrop in the left foreground. On the hillside in the right foreground a flume descends as drainage from a mine. In the middle distance is a building with smoking chimney; this may function as part of the mining operations. On the hillside further away along the bay are several pitched tents of the miners' camp. A steep path descends from the slope above the building in the central distance.
Location is possibly Shortland, showing the Firth of Thames in the left distance.
The Shortland area was opened up in 1867. Hoyte moved from the Auckland area to Dunedin by 1876.
