Description

In addition to inward correspondence the folder contains some letters between other people associated with Atkinson

The Maori letters contain information about Maori customary practices, news about goldfields in New Zealand and about the affairs of the Native Affairs Department, news about activities at Parihaka and about the opening of a meeting house at Rahotu, intelligence from Hetaraka Nera about the King Movement and the war preparations being made; there is also a letter seeking money for land pledged by Teira to the Government, despite the protests of Wi Kingi

The Maori letters also contain social gossip, waiata, a letter from a wife to her imprisoned husband, a note about debt repayment, and a letter from Riwai Te Ahu about the place of the Anglican church within the Kingitanga
