Description

Looking along Hardy Street, Nelson, circa 1885. Commercial buildings line both sides of the street. The business of T H Foy can be seen centre right. Up the left side are the lines of the Nelson tramway and a tram is halfway up the street. A horse and cart is on the right. People can be seen on the footpaths, including two men in hats on the left. Photograph taken by E Wheeler & Son, Christchurch, NZ.

The Nelson tramway was originally the Dun Mountain railway to the Copper Mine. The railway opened in 1862 and was the first in New Zealand. It closed ca 1905. (Information from back of file print)
