Description

View of Pohaturoa Rock across the Waikato River. The rock is situated near Atiamuri. Photographed by Thomas Pringle in about 1908

The rock is a volcanic crag or "plug" of rhyolite rising 245m above the Waikato River. It figures in the tribal narratives of both the Arawa and Ngati Raukawa people, and was often used as a lookout post during inter-tribal wars. During the 20th century it was surrounded and covered by a commercial state pine forest.
