Description

Head and shoulders profile portrait of Maori chief, probably from Te Rauparaha's "Kawhia" tribe, wearing striped shirt and shark's tooth ear pendant

From Kawhia and probably Ngati Toa, Ngati Koata or Ngati Rarua iwi, all of which settled the top of the South Island where they are still resident. The subject's correct name is unknown.

The name Takup may be a rendering of Te Kapu. A Peniamini (Benjamin) Te Kapu of Pelorus River was baptised by Rev Samuel Ironsides on 7 October 1842.
