The letters in this collection are written by John Gibson to his brother Charles Edmund Gibson. One, dated 5th Nov 1868, describes precautions and preparations in operation because of the war. The other, dated 18th December 1868, gives an account of the fight with Hauhau that occurred on the 15th December. It also includes a sketch map of the village of Taumaha where part of the fighting took place. Also included is a stock list for Gibson's store dated 1 Oct 1888.

Accompanying material - Accompanied by a letter from the donor giving some provenance details and explaining some of the content of the material.
John Gibson lived in Patea where he established and ran a general store. He was part of the Wanganui Volunteer Cavalry which under Captain Finnimore fought with the Hauhau at Manutahi and Taumaha on the 15th Dec 1868.
