Original captions read: "A timber ship at her berth in the port of Tauranga is being loaded with N.Z. exports for Australia - In front of the old Post Office (now the Social Security building) is the famous Aspen tree - Death sentence was pronounced early in the year but the force of public opinion has held back the axe for a few more years." "Tauranga already handles over 53,000 tons of cargo inward and outward. This year it will exceed 80,000 tons, and it is expected that 50,000 tons of timber will be shipped to build houses for Australians."
