Description: The papers relate to Luxford's career as an actress, 1920s-1930s, and later as a print and radio journalist, 1930s-1950s, as well as material on the ANZAC Club, the ANZAC Memorial Garden in New York, ANZAC Hour broadcasts, ANZAC Day commemorations and the British American Ambulance Corps, all of which she was involved with during WWII. Further material relates to Luxford's work with the fashion shows at Hotel Pierre, New York in the 1950s. There are also papers on her work with volunteer and charitable organisations from the 1940s, including certificates awarded to her. In 1996 Luxford's diaries and note books, and a collection of letters from the author Zane Grey, were added to the collection. In 1998, further diaries, newspaper cuttings and correspondence relating mainly to Nola's private and domestic life were donated by Ms Carole van Grondelle, who was using them as source material for her biography. Description: Hurst describes his voyage from London to Lyttelton on the `Waitangi' covering the period 30 Jun 1880 to 10 Oct 1880, the last entry being written at Broom Cottage in Christchurch. The entries detail weather, the ship's progress, fellow passengers and ship life. Christopher and Mary Hurst came to New Zealand on board the Waitangi in 1880 along with their seven children. On arrival they lived in Broom Cottage (Christchurch) and later established a farm near Waimate called `Brooklands'. They had seven more children in New Zealand. Description: Comprises copy of photograph of J H Milburn and copy from page of his diary; introduction by donor describing J H Milburn, his background, life, time and experiences in the army and other matters; copies of maps showing campaign movements, introduction and edited transcription by Grant Milburn, of diary kept by J H Milburn. J H Milburn wrote brief daily entries about military actions undertaken, listed members of his platoon and whether they were killed, survived, wounded or died; he describes Gallipoli in considerable detail, and subsequent events, and his later dysentery and the various forms of treatment given. He writes of his time in hospital in Malta and in England and describes life outside hopsital in both places. An address list, abbreviations, notes on firing, currencies, phrases in Turkish, Egyptian and French, and a clipping by Paul Bolding `Name revives bitter memories' from the `Evening post' (1985) Source of title - Transcribed J H Milburn, grand-father of the donor, joined the NZ army in 1914, served at Gallipoli in 1915 and was discharged from the army in 1918. The diary covers 1915 only; it is not known if he kept other diaries. His regiment is given as the Taranaki Regiment of the Wellington Rifles. Description: Volume begins for 1943 in the middle pages of the diary, continues to the end then begins again at the front of the diary in the lower half of the page. Diary covers military life during embarkation from Wellington and the voyage to Egypt. Cargill recounts daily life and also records the books he has read on the journey. Describes activities while training in camp and day trips to local sights and visits to the Army dentist. Involved in the Western Allies invasion of Italy in September 1943. Describes various military attacks his unit is involved in. Received a head wound fighting in Cassino and recounts his recuperation in an American Army hospital. Transferred to a general hospital in Naples and details life as a patient. Cargill is discharged from hospital but continues on as a carpenter working to the Command Sergeant Major. Description: The original collection comprises three parts (1) material relating to a proposed biography of Pat Macaskill; (2) material relating to a proposed biography of Len Castle; and (3) personal papers of Leov Lealand, now arranged in series. The part of the collection relating to Pat Macaskill includes background information about both subject and biographer, his family and family letters, speeches and writings of Macaskill, and other material. The personal papers of Leov Lealand include correspondence, cards, photographs and other memorabilia. The material relating to Len Castle is of two types (a) relating to a proposed biography with correspondence and interviews and (b) the personal relationship between Leov Lealand and Castle. One box in the collection relates to personal memorabilia including photographs, clippings, correspondence and other papers; this is not further listed Also includes collection of diaries, journals, some personal papers and literary drafts. Also includes sound recordings which were transferred to Oral History and Sound from the Manuscripts collection in 1996. Guests staying at Government House are noted; some leisure activities are mentioned, eg tennis, riding or shooting and he lists the people involved, but there are no personal observations or comments by the diarist.
