The account describes a journey made by Smith and four others from Taranaki to Mokau, Taupo, Rotomahana, Tarawera and Rangitikei in 1858. Additional illustrations have been incorporated into the volume as have notes by Smith, `Continuation of journey to New Plymouth' (1919) and a newsclipping from the `Taranaki Herald' (1920) inserted at the end. (Published by `Taranaki News', 1858).
