In the main part of the cartoon 'then', A smiling boy representing Malta is presented with a George Cross and fawned over by Britannia, John Bull and various courtiers and members of the public 'If there's anything we can do... We are so grateful... etc, etc...' The George Cross was awarded to the island of Malta by King George VI of the United Kingdom in a letter dated 15 April 1942 to the island's Governor Lieutenant-General Sir William Dobbie, so as to "bear witness to the heroism and devotion of its people" during the great siege it underwent in the early parts of World War II. In the smaller image (bottom right) 'and now' the same small Maltese boy who carries a banner that reads 'Plea for independence and financial aid' is kicked through the door of the Colonial Office'.
