The mouth of either the Manawatu or Rangitikei Rivers with canoes crossing, horses swimming across and a large square cart on a canoe, its wheels over the sides and hanging in the water, so that it resembles a small paddle-steamer. P. travelled up the coast and had to encounter the nuisance and danger of the rivers, some very broad and rapid - To go to Wanganui [from Wellington] there are six considerable tidal rivers ...'
