Description: Photographs fall into three general groups: those relating to Jock McEwen's professional career with Island and Maori affairs; those that relate to his interest in Māori art and culture; those that probably relate in some way to his own family and background. The first group includes recordes of the diplomatic and ceremonial side of events in Samoa, The Cook Islands, and Tokelau, in the 1970s. There are groups of photographs of Wellington Māori clubs rehearsing for Waitangi Day celebrations, and of events at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference Wellington, 1965. The second group consists of photographs of mahi toi (Māori art), taonga (artifacts), and whare (buildings). Many of these date from the 1880s and 90s and some have belonged to S Percy Smith, one of the albums having his name on the end paper. In this group there are also photographs of Māori, and groups of Māori, many in traditional dress photographed in association with wharenui (meeting houses). Some of the people have been identified. There are also what may be personal and family photographs. The largest collection of these have been made by a missionary family working in the Melanesian Mission in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu (New Hebrides) between 1918 and 1928. Description: Comprises photographs relating to Springbok Tour protests taken by various photographers, all likely throughout 1981. Photographs have been grouped in individual folders and labelled according to the regions in which they were taken. Also includes original enclosures of photographs, mostly envelopes, which have been annotated to note the location in which the photographs were taken. Many of the photographs have been annotated verso with dates, locations, and additional identifying information including the names of photographers and subjects. Folder 1 includes photographs relating to protests in the Auckland region, including images of a HART stall at a festival. Also includes a typewritten list of photographs, though it does not appear to relate to the photographs in this folder. Folder 2 includes photographs relating to protests in the Wellington region. Also includes the original housing with a note from Gwenda Pearson to Rona Bailey. Folder 3 includes photographs of protests in Christchurch and on the West Coast, including portraits of people injured during protests. Also includes an annotated manila folder, though annotations do not appear to relate to the contents. Folder 4 includes colour photographs mostly taken by John O’Reilly of protests in the Wellington region, predominantly in the suburb of Newtown. Includes several photographs showing altercations between protestors and police. Folder 5 includes photographs relating to protests in the Nelson region, taken 22 August 1981. Folder 6 includes photographs of protestors and police, likely in Christchurch. The photographs were housed in a folded sheet of paper which reads “Sequence of shots taken by Peter Tones [sic] on roof at corner of Stevens St and Wilsons Rd…” Folder 7 includes photographs of protests in the Wellington region, taken on 1 May 1981, as part of the “Mobilise May 1” protest. Union representatives are pictured marching alongside Springbok Tour protestors. Folder 8 includes photographs of protests in Napier, originally housed in a photograph envelope with an annotation that reads “Napier | Boks vs Maoris” and “H Bay” (possibly a photographer). Folder 9 includes photographs of protests in Nelson. The photographs have been annotated and numbered verso and are accompanied by a typewritten list. Also includes an annotated aerial photograph of Trafalgar Park, and a photograph of the park entrance, likely used in planning protest action. Folder 10 includes photographs relating to protests in Christchurch, including some taken by the Christchurch Press Company Ltd. Previously housed in an envelope reading “Ch Ch May 1 Photos”. Other photographs in this folder are annotated verso, some with dates. Folder 11 includes photographs taken by John O’Reilly from protests in Wellington, previously housed in an envelope reading “Photos Wgtn Prob Aug 5…” Folder 12 includes photographs taken by John O’Reilly from protests in Masterton. Folder 13 includes photographs of protests in Wellington, taken 12 September 1981, possibly by Ans Westra. Originally housed in an envelope addressed to the Wellington Central Library and annotated “Hart National | Ans Westra [crossed out] | for selection…” Folder 14 includes photographs of protests in Rotorua. Also includes a note that reads “These are some photos taken by a member of our anti-apartheid group (not a Hart member!) – he thought you could use some of them for Amandla…” Folder 15 includes photographs of protests in Hamilton, annotated verso with dates and other identifying information. Folder 16 includes photographs of protests in Dunedin taken by Alan Cumming. Also includes a handwritten list of photographs included, signed “Francesca”. Photographs are annotated verso with identifying information which has been expanded on in the handwritten list. Folder 17 includes photographs of protests in Taranaki, taken by Taranaki Daily News photographers. Photographs have been stamped verso with Taranaki Newspapers Ltd copyright stamps. Folder 18 includes photographs of protests in New Plymouth taken by Sam Hales. Originally housed in an envelope including a typewritten sticker by the photographer relating to the photographs and reuse requirements. Folder 19 includes photographs of protests in Auckland, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill, taken by Alan Cumming. Many have been annotated verso with location and date. Folder 20 includes photographs of protests in Palmerston North on 1 August 1981 by Brian Davis and David Bulls. Folder 21 includes photographs of protests in New Plymouth, including several contact sheets that correspond to the prints. Some contact sheets include stamps verso that read “Copyright photography by Taranaki Newspapers Ltd…” Folder 22 includes photographs of protests in Wellington. Originally housed in an envelope that reads “Photos for Trevor for Amandla”. Several of the photographs have been annotated verso with identifying information including dates, locations, and photographers’ names. Folder 23 includes copy photographic prints that have been used in books, including some cut from book pages. The photographs are accompanied by captions noting the photographer, location, and date. Some have been pasted to paper and annotated with page and other publication information. Some sheets of paper include several photographic prints, including a book page which features a photograph either side. Description: Comprises photographs taken by Valerie Christine Burton in 2005 of events, objects, and activities relating to Māori. The majority of the photographs were taken during Waitangi Day events at Waitangi, Bay of Islands; and at the Te Matatini National Festival kapa haka competition at Palmerston North. Other photographs show the Māori rock drawings at Duntroon, Otago; waka ama rowers practising for a crossing of Cook Strait; and young kapa haka performers in Taupo. Selected photographs were digitally scanned by Burton in September 2016. Permissions forms for some of the people featured in photographs are filed in the Photographic Archive backfile under "Burton, Valerie Christine". The forms do not relate to individual photographs, and in many cases do not give full names. Since 1997 Canadian photographer Valerie Chistine Burton has travelled in Canada, India, Mexico, New Zealand, and China, producing a large photographic body of work featuring indigenous communities and their cultural festivals and practices. Description: Cartes de visite of largely unidentified people. Portraits of Edmund Tuke, Richard Seddon, Wiremu Patara Te Tui, Mahuta Te Toko, Sir George Westmore, Guide Rangi, Maggie Papakura, Rev William Williams, Eria Raukura, and Elsdon Best. There are two group photographs of the Wanganui and Taranaki Forest Rangers. Government tourist images of Maori women in traditional dress, and a Maori woman wearing a taniko bordered cloak at Koriniti. A group of photographs of Maori artifacts includes stone lamps and anchor stones, toi moko (preserved heads), and a carved canoe prow. A man is shown making fire at Ruatahuna in 1899, pages from a manuscript writen by Wi Maihi, Te Karehana Whakataki of Ngati Poa standing beside the stone anchor of Matahorua, te Punga a Matahorua, and views of a model pa. Hei whakamōhio: He whakaahua o ngā kōiwi tangata i roto i tēnei pouaka. Please be aware this box contains images of human remains. The group of photographs which include the stone lamps were, according to the original envelope, used by Best in his publications. Description: Collection comprises four hand-coloured copper engravings, dating from circa 1766 to circa 1785. Artworks depict; a world map, a New Holland (Australian) possum, rangatira Māori with mataora tattoos, and a Mercury Bay scene. Each engraving is accompianied by a typed caption, possibly created in the 1970s. Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: Arrived at Library on mat boards and in frames. Physical Description: Hand-coloured engravings Provenance: John and Erna Baum bought the engravings while visiting New Zealand in the 1970s from an unknown vendor. The couple then returned to the United States with the artworks. After their deaths, the engravings were donated to the Library by their children. Description: Collection of materials accumulated and created by Rodney Brett Henden comprising his personal papers, relating mainly to his travel, work, and research interests in Māori, Polynesian, and Melanesian cultures, and his family papers which include the papers, diaries, and photographs of his mother Roma Muriel Henden and his uncle Noel Farr Hoggard. Title supplied by Library. Arrangement: Following Henden's death, the trustee selected items for donation to the Library, grouping them in boxes based on themes. The original order is not clear. Rodney was possibly writing a biography on his mother, and as a result, her photos and papers have been arranged into themes. Arrangement of the collection follows the order as delivered to the Library. Rodney Brett Henden worked at the Department of Maori Affairs in the 1980s and contributed to publications such as the New Zealand Oxford Pocket Dictionary and the Waitangi Tribunal publication 'Te Aratirohanga'. He was the son of writer Roma Muriel Henden and Albert Frederick Henden, and nephew of writer Noel Farr Hoggard. Henden travelled to various Pacific Ocean nations between the 1980s and 1990s, including to Vanuatu circa 1992 on an indigenous architecture study trip.
