A night view of Shackleton's camp during winter, probably from the first visit of 1907-1909, but possibly from the second visit in 1915 (in which case it would have been painted after the event). The image is dark, showing ice floes, with a small lit shelter shining in the gloom.
Marston drew and painted during the 1907/1909 and the 1915 expedition, but most of the 1915 works were destroyed in the wreck of the 'Endurance'. If this scene relates to the 1915 expedition, it would have been painted after the event. Once back home in Putney, Marston went on to paint further scenes of Antarctica, until the end of his life.
