The collection comprises three soldier's paybooks (Jul 1915-Apr 1919); personal papers including leave approval, Paris (Sep 1917); a copy of report on Young to Education Dept (1919); JP's certificate address lists, calling cards & bills; printed ephemera from the NZEF Masonic Association sent to Young during the war

Young was born in Winton, Southland. He entered the Post & Telegraph Dept in 1902. During WWI he served with the NZ Engineers, Divisional Signal Company in Egypt, Gallipoli and France. He returned to NZ in 1919 with rank of Captain. Was Director-General of Post & Telegraph Dept from 1939-1945, appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1940, and awarded a CBE in 1946. He appears to have had connections with the Masonic Lodge
