Inscriptions: Verso - top centre - Photos of historical interest 1924; Verso - centre - Print 2. Specimen of Maori Carving. This is to be seen on the summit of an old Maori fort, close to the famous British Waihi Redoubt. The trenches just below, surround it on 4 sides in the shape of a square. Quite a number of "Maori holes" are to be found on the far side of the building. The Waihi cemetery is laid out on the "southern" slope of this fortified hill. The carved poles were presented to the Normanby Town Board, after their removal from the Christchurch Exhibition. These same poles have figured very largely in the history of the township, as the innocent cause of many a storm.; Verso - bottom centre - Robt E Wells, Hadfield Hostel, Kelburn, Wgton
