Date: 1777 - 1784

By: Webber, John, 1751-1793; Hogg and Company

Description: Shows clearing in tropical vegetation. At right is an opened thatched shelter with two seated figures beside it. Closer at right a man walks with fruit or other foodstuffs tied to either end of a pole over his right shoulder. At left on a raised circular area is a thatched windowless hut. There are palm trees in the background. This is engraved after a drawing by Webber on Cook's third voyage, 1777. This picture has similar elements but differs from William Hodges' "Afia-too-ca..." engraved by W. Byrne (see C-051-022); also differs from Webber's "View of a fa'itoka, or burying place in Tongataboo" (engraving at A-111-020/020-a). This latter, engraved by Thornton, appears immediately after the work here described, in Anderson's "A new authentic and complete collection of voyages ..." (1784-86). It is possible that Thornton was also the engraver of this work. (See previous note.) ATL has Anderson, George W. (ed), "A new authentic and complete collection of voyages..." London, 1784-86 at: f Rare 910.8 ANDE New 1784-86. Extended Title - From: Anderson, George William (ed.), "A new authentic and complete collection of voyages..." opposite page 462.
