Description: Manuscripts related to a land sale in New Zealand between Jules Augusten Duvauchelle and Henry Chater, both from Kororāreka (Russell), Bay of Islands, in 1840. Comprises: - Deed, dated 20 June 1840. - Sales document, 'Victoria Allotment 4 Section C' signed by James Busby, witnessed by Gilbert Mair and one other. - Receipt for 25 pounds and 12 shillings, dated Kororareka, 29 April 1840. - Envelope addressed to Henry Chater. Indenture makes reference to sale of parcel of land at Kororareka bounded by land owned by John Scott and Jules Augusten Duvauchelle, in an area also known as Aputa or "Aputada", originally sold by Ahongi Ahoki and Atoko, chiefs of "Aputada" to Benjamin Evans Turner on 6 November 1838, and onsold by Turner to Duvauchelle on 13 December 1839. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Nora Elizabeth Kenworthy-Thompson; original land grant to John McBeth; verification when farm was passed to Murdoch McBeth, and later to Nora Kenworthy-Thompson; line of ownership, 1860-2005; narrative of family history and family pedigree (5 generational chart); photographs John McBeth and his wife Ann came to New Zealand from Nova Scotia with Ann's father Murdoch Mclennan. They were granted 160 acres of land at Kauri, Northland in 1867. He broke in the land and in 1874 built a homestead on the property. John grew vegetables on the land and over time acquired a small dairy herd. On his death in 1900 the farm was taken over by his son Murdoch and then by his daughter Nora who married Ralph Kenworthy-Thompson. See also Burtenshaw, May. From castle to cave. Description: Early cadastral map of Whangarei land blocks, including Owhiwa, Tamatarau, Kaiwha, Waikare and Whanui. The Tamatarau and Kaiwha blocks are sub-divided into numbered lots. Several Native Reserves are named Waimahanga, Pakikaukutu, Taranui, Kahaha and Taiharuru; one is unnamed. 'Native land' blocks are named Ruriwai and Waikaraka; another is 'claimed by Tirarau'. One block is named Kohinui, 442 acres. In the Kaiwha block, lot 71 is named Kakuia, 267 acres. The named settler blocks are Edward Dent, Gorries claim, Hay's claim, Soott and Brown. The remaining land is not surveyed. Some pencil annotations have been added to the map, naming areas in the Whanui block 'Te Ruatepapa', 'Te Hauku' and 'Herematai'; as well as numerical survey markings. Some writing on the back on the map is indecipherable. Due to tears in map, a small amount of text is indecipherable. Other Titles - Tamaterau Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s).
