Shows view over uneven hilly country, with farmhouse at left, and further away the barracks on the headland summit of Bluff Hill (site of the 1967 hospital, at the end of Napier terrace). The Sacred Heart Girl's College, Convent Street, stands on the site of the farmhouse shown. The Barracks were built for the 65th Regiment in 1858 [known as Gore Browne Barracks or Napier Barracks].
In his "Family recollections" (Rotorua, 1999 - copy held in Manuscripts in June 2000), Richard Basil Taylor says that the home of John Thomas Tylee, his ancestor, is shown in this picture. This assertion has not been confirmed by additional evidence.
