Copy of an engraving after William Hodges 'View of the Island of Pines, New Caledonia' from the second voyage of Captain James Cook to the Pacific, published 1777. Shows Kanak houses amidst pine trees and other native vegetation, with a man pointing towards the sea, left of centre. Verso shows handwritten text in Dutch.
There is a variation in the way the single figure is drawn in this and the engraved version. The engraving shows the man facing the viewer, a spear behind his back. In this version, he is facing away, the spear in his left hand
