Shows the ship Mountaineer, with passengers on board, ready for launching at Lake Wakatipu with spectators standing around.

Inscriptions: Mount verso - The P.S. Mountaineer ready for launching at Lake Wakaitipu. This vessel was built in Dunedin by Kingcaid & McQueen Engineers - 1885? It was built at the works in Dunedin then dismantled into sections, conveyed by road to the Lake and re-assembled at Kingston. I understand it was the first steamer on the lake.
