Arthur Thomas Bothamley sitting in a room in his home at 18 Selwyn Terrace, Thorndon, W...

Date: 1890s

From: Bothamley, Arthur Thomas, 1846-1938 :Negatives

Reference: 1/1-013371-G

Description: Arthur Thomas Bothamley sitting in a room in his home at 18 Selwyn Terrace, Thorndon, Wellington. Shows items of furniture and many framed photographs. Photograph taken in the 1890s. Possibly a self portrait. "Arthur Thomas Bothamley was born in Surrey in 1846. He arrived in New Zealand in 1869 and was first employed in the Legislative Council in 1871. In 1892 he was appointed the first Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod, a position from which he retired in 1937. By custom the Gentleman Usher is sent by the Sovereign (or her representative) to desire the attendance of the lower house in the chamber at the opening of Parliament. During the 1890s he and his wife, Elizabeth, lived in Selwyn Terrace, off Hill Street, Thorndon. Note the paper press in the adjoining room, the painted screens (which seem to illustrate a poem), and the bird cage in the window. Examples of Bothamley's photographs and watercolours are held in the Alexander Turnbull Library, as are a manuscript diary and letters." (Information taken from caption used in "Darling, I'm home!" display). Exhibited in 'Darling, I'm Home!' exhibition at the National Library of New Zealand, 1 June - 5 July 1999. Source of descriptive information - 18 Selwyn Terrace recognised by a later owner of the house. Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).
