HMS Collingwood gained its name from Lord Collingwood who was a distinguished Admiral at the turn of the 19th century. The first HMS Collingwood was launched at Pembroke in 1841, the first HMS Collingwood was an 80 Gun Wooden Man-o-War. She was 2,585 tons, 190 feet in length and had a crew of 750. Her armament comprised four 68 pounder, sixty-eight 32 pounder and four 18 pounder guns, together with four 32 pounder carronades. She was one of the last wooden battleships built. Despite the expense of her conversion the Collingwood saw no more active service (Source: royalnavy.mod.uk).

Description: Memoir (two volumes) covers the period June 1844 to July 1848, during which the ship visited Madeira, Rio, the ports of Chile, Peru, Mexico and California, and the Sandwich and Society Islands. Narrative of 27 chapters provides indepth detail of navy life, as well as descriptions of ports visited and Markham's adventures with the crew. Memoir includes extensive illustrations, pen and ink sketches, ink and wash route-maps, harbour plans, hand-coloured flags and coats of arms, photographs and six letters tipped into the volumes. Memoir houses some original manuscript leaves inserted at appropriate points in the narrative. Sketches mostly drawn by Dr John Speer, the ship's Second Assistant Surgeon.
