Shows six canoes of British soldiers paddling up the Waikare Inlet towards low hills with some buildings of the Kapotai Pa in the background. Some soldiers stand on the bank in groups on the right.
Compare with the engraving after this watercolour" "Waikare river expedition" (Neg. 1/2-119208-F), published in A. S. Thomson "The story of New Zealand" (London, 1859), vol. 2, page 111.
