Description: Illustration of a flax plant shows the whole plant with a central flower stem, and details of the flower, open calyx, fruit or seedpod, cross-section of seedpod, seed and cross-section of seed. This is probably a page from J.J.H. Labillardiere's "Novae Hollandiae plantarum specimen", published originally in 1804-1806, to which Turpin contributed a selection of Australian material. However, the 1804-1806 edition is reportedly 36 cm in height, and this print is on a page that is only 154 mm high. Nevertheless the layout of the page and headings is the same as the pages in that book (See examples at http://www.publish.csiro.au/samples/300YearsSample.pdf, page 7 - retrieved 5 April 2011) Other Titles - Flax of New Holland. One-twelfth natural size. Whole flower; calyx open to show pistil and stamens; fruit cut horizontally; seed cut vertically Other Titles - Monocotyledons, asphodels Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Physical Description: Hand-coloured engraving, image 154 x 89 mm, on page 205 x 117 mm. Provenance: Purchased from Antiquarian Art, Lower Hutt, April 2011.
