One of three drawings on the same sheet, annotated in pencil 'Sketches on journey of D McLean and Rev. R. Taylor, Oct. 1845'. The two other sketches are 'Our encampment, Novr 29th 1845' and 'A natural logan rock on the road from the Wakatumutumu to the Mokau'.

The name Hoperiki is probably Taylor's error for Operiki. Operiki Pa is on the Whanganui River just north of Koroniti

[Major Charles Bulkeley, later Brigadier Charles Bulkeley Bulkeley-Johnson, 1867-1917, may have been the son Major Francis Beaumaris Bulkeley of the 65th Regiment. The Coates referred to may be Sir James Hugh Buchanan Coates, who was in England during the 1914-1918 war]
