The luggage is being lifted up a low cliff face. In the background is a mountain and part of a lake or the sea. Description: A Christian chief, probably of Tahiti 'assuring weeping friends and relatives of his certainty through divine grace of admission to heaven'. His head-dress suggests a Tahitian location - compare the head-dress of the chief standing in William Hodges' 1777 engraving 'A toupapow with a corpse on it, attended by the Chief Mourner in his habit of ceremony'. Two raised marae are in the background, of a type recorded by missionaries around 1800. Probably used as an illustration for lecture tours. See description in: Working Men's Educational Union.
