Description: A Christian chief, probably of Tahiti 'assuring weeping friends and relatives of his certainty through divine grace of admission to heaven'. His head-dress suggests a Tahitian location - compare the head-dress of the chief standing in William Hodges' 1777 engraving 'A toupapow with a corpse on it, attended by the Chief Mourner in his habit of ceremony'. Two raised marae are in the background, of a type recorded by missionaries around 1800. Probably used as an illustration for lecture tours. See description in: Working Men's Educational Union. Description: Four gold miners, one panning in a stream, two carrying rocks and nuggets away on a trestle, a third working a cradle and directing a flow of water back into the stream. One of the men has a pistol at his waist. Dated on the basis of another copy in a private collection of the same print which has a variant Working Men's Educational Union stamp at the base, complete with a date of 1852. This suggests that the scene is likely to be of the American gold fields, not New Zealand, since gold was discovered in both Australia and New Zealand after 1852. The variant stamp also suggests that multiple copies of the same images were printed at different times. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - stamp of the Working Men's Educational Union above the number 45 Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Physical Description: Printed calico (hand-col.) 850 x 1190 mm
