"X" 439, and X class steam locomotive, type 4-8-2, with W Futter standing in front, photographed in 1908 by Albert Percy Godber at the Petone Railway Workshops.

"X" 439 was built as X class (compound) by New Zealand Railways at Addington (maker's no 94/08), went into service on the 9th of January 1909, was converted to X class (simple) in June 1947 and was written off on the 2nd of March 1957. (Information from the 'Register of New Zealand Railways Steam Locomotives 1863-1971' by W G Lloyd, 1974, page 62.)
