Description

The first steam locomotive to run in New Zealand was Canterbury Railways No. 1, built in 1862 by Slaughter, Gruning and Co., Bristol, named "Pilgrim". First journey made on 1 December 1863, hauling the first train over part of the line between Christchurch and Ferrymead (near Heathcote). Photograph taken by an unidentified photographer. This film negative is a copy taken from the Godber Album Vol 109, p104 (PA1-q-102)
