Description

The group, originally numbered A-308-001 to A-308-033 consisted of two groups of prints: A-308-001/028: 28 small etchings, dismounted by the Library from matting sheets containing 2-4 etchings each. These are Monrad Collection, returned to Te Papa, 21 February 2007: A-308-029/033: 5 larger etchings, mostly copies by other hands.

A-308-029: "The three trees". 1643. Etching with drypoint and burin, 204 x 280 mm (Could be a copy by Byron? Or possible cropped from original 213 x 279 mm). (B 212).

A-308-030: "The three trees". Reverse copy (by W Baillie?). Etching, 210 x 280 mm. (See notes about copies under B 212 in White and Boon's book).

A-308-031: "Landscape with a cottage and haybarn: oblong". 1641. Etching, 129 x 312 mm. May be a copy - see line on upright pole at left, and the 6 and 4 of the date 1641). (B 225).

A-308-032: "The raising of Lazarus: the larger plate" [ca 1632]. Etching and burin, image 366 x 258 mm, with arched top on plate 415 x 295 mm. (B 73, version IX or X; but depending on how dimensions are interpreted, it may be a larger copy, perhaps by P F Basan - sometimes attributed to Denon).

A-308-033: "Evening" / Rembrandt del. / W B, Leyden 1765. Etching, 182 x 312 mm. Not found in books of Rembrandt's etchings. Not by Rembrandt.

Titles taken from Christopher White and Karel G Boon's "Rembrandt's etchings; an illustrated critical catalogue in two volumes" (Amsterdam, 1969). Bartsch's numbering is given in brackets after each title, preceded by the letter B. Donor's number is indicated where applicable; this number does not appear to relate to any of the numbering systems recognised by White and Boon.

Physical dimensions vary (by a very small number of millimetres) in some cases from those given in White and Boon. In all cases, physical dimensions given are those for the Library's copies. This may indicate that some works are copies rather than by Rembrandt himself.
